A Cacao Beet Smoothie

The ovulatory phase is the shortest phase of the menstrual cycle, lasting only 1-2 days. Estrogen peaks, testosterone increases, and the luteinizing hormone surges, causing the egg to be released for possible fertilization.

Our energy is typically at its highest and our appetite is likely decreased.

I don’t eat much raw food — if I do, it’s during the summer, or during ovulation. If there’s any phase of our cycle where eating raw foods makes sense — it’s ovulation. Cue this beet chocolate smoothie. A go to for me.

As estrogen is at its highest in ovulation, it is wise to focus on supporting our liver and ensuring we have proper, timely elimination. The deep, rich pigments in beets + blueberries denote their antioxidant qualities, which are important during ovulation! These antioxidants are known to increase glutathione, support the detoxification process, and combat free radicals.

Raw, fermented cacao is also an antioxidant and is enriched with minerals that support the body during ovulation. Flaxseed is a good source of fiber, which will assist the body in eliminating hormones.

For this antioxidant-rich smoothie, you’ll need:

1 frozen banana

2 small beets, cooked and peeled

1 cup of coconut mik

1.5 tsp cacao powder

1 tsp ceylon cinnamon

1 tsp honey

1 tsp vanilla extract

1.5 tsp flaxseed powder

Combine in a blender and blend until smooth.

This smoothie is earthy, slightly sweet, nourishing, and is great as a post-workout beverage and partial meal.
